Course Description

Smallpox, a disease of the past and a threat for the future, is a Category A concern for the CDC. Cause, differential diagnosis issues, containment, and mitigation issues are addressed in the Smallpox Module. Included is a virtual laboratory exercise to test your ability to trace an outbreak.

Course Outline

  1. Identify the physical characteristics of the organism Varriola major.
  2. Identify the characteristics that made it possible to eradicate smallpox as a naturally occurring disease.
  3. Differentiate between smallpox and chickenpox.     
  4. Describe why camelpox and monkeypox as well as smallpox are being investigated as potential agents of biological terrorism.
  5. Describe the epidemiology of past smallpox epidemics and the relationship of mode of dispersion to success of an intentional release.
  6. Recognize the effect a bioterrorism event involving smallpox may have on a community.
  7. Describe the disease progression and the clinical precautions that must be initiated to prevent further spread of the disease within the care facility.
  8. State why environmental sampling would not be an activity associated with a smallpox outbreak.
  9. Outline the basic vaccination protocol that would be initiated following the confirmation of a single case of smallpox.
